Bangalore - Shaken but not scared...

One of the saddest days in the history of Bangalore. July 25th, 2008.
Nine serial low intensity bomb blasts rocking the Garden city !!

The news came like a bolt from the blue around 1:30 pm. My brother calls me up & says.. "hey.. dont you know what has happened.. there are serial blasts hapeening in & around Madivala checkpost". At first I thought, he is fooling around with me. I asked "Is it a joke or something??"
Then realized that the unthinkable did happen. It continued to happen till 2:30 pm at various other places in the city & one around 5:30pm. Thew news spread like a wild fire in a few minutes once the first few blasts occured.

I was in the office when I got this news ! I was quite shaken up by hearing such a news.

The Dream of a LIFETIME for an INDIAN cricket fan comes true at last !!

13 runs needed off 6 balls... for Pakistan to clinch the World Cup... Everybody watching with bated breath.... Dhoni handed the ball to Joginder Sharma, the small town lad who did not look menacing by any means in front of Pak's Misbah-ul-Haq who had clobbered Harbhajan Singh in the penultimate over.

The first ball is a wide !! There goes our hopes down the drain... Jogi hit for a straight six the next ball... All our Indian hearts came till the mouth... The feeling of despair & helplessness that with just a boundary it will all be over.
We really believed that this young team without the 3 big guns of the Indian cricket will bring us the World's 1st T20 World Cup.

Hearts pounding again with Joginder bowling his next delivery.... We feared that Misbah would repeat the Javed Miandad act to win it for the Pakis.

Misbah tries to be smart & tries to scoop it behind Dhoni, the Wicket keeper.... What happened...? The ball is in the air & voila....
Sheer luck.... Its Sreesanth under the ball trying to catch the ball... And there she lands in his hands..... It was Pakistan's last wicket... Woow... It took some time for us to sink in our mind that India had won a World Cup !!!

Hurray!!! That was an involuntary hooting from all of us watching the match... In seconds I heard fire cracker sounds in my vicinity... This called for a huge celebration. We had friends messaging congratulating each other as if all we are going to get a share of the prize money :)
But really to tell you the fact... Its always an occasion of celebration when you feel proud to be an INDIAN.

This was an amazing feeling.... It brought out the nostalgic memories in my mind.... My mind rolled back to a few months ago.... March-April 2007 where India had crashed out of the W. Indies World Cup & couldn't even reach the super 8 stages. Its a known phenomena that Cricket is a religion in our nation which is over emphasized at times. The players are literally crucified when they lose in key tournaments & are held high in godly stature when they win.

Flash back to the 2003 S. Africa World Cup where India had done so well to reach the Finals but lost out to Aussies as they were too smart to be outsmarted by the Indians. In 1999 India failed to reach the Semis in England. It was a horrendous semifinals in 1996 for the Indian when they were outsmarted by the Lankans. I remember that I had high hopes on the then Indian cricketers, after that thrilling Pakistan match in the Quarter finals where India won it. The semis were abandoned due to crowd disruption in Cacutta, Eden Gardens.... after India failed to make an impact in all the departments of the game. I even remember myself crying along with Vinod Kambli :P

I am sure every cricket buff in this country would have had similar feelings as I have described above. I am sure people would have cursed Ravi Shastri as many times as me when he wasted balls in one day games... We have cursed the bowlers whenever they conceded unreasonable runs in crucial matches... But today's game had made us forgive all that.

At last... Nevertheless... Its the Dream of a lifetime for an Indian cricket fan to come true.
Too good a dream to come true... As I smiled & gazed at my wife for bearing with me when I watched this final match....my wife mused.... Imagine what if Sreesanth had dropped that catch?? I said, 'Dont even think about it'...

Does Sanjay Dutt really deserve sympathy?

It was 31st July 2007, the D-Day for Sanjay Dutt which would decide his fate for the next few years... I too waited to know the outcome of the court's verdict.

Out came the verdict... Sanjay dutt was sentenced for 6 years of rigorous imprisonment. My first reaction to it was that I felt sorry for the 48 year old man. I had always loved the on screen image of sanjay Dutt.
It felt like our dear munna bhai is paying the penalty for being a celebrity.

But as I slowly started looking back at his past acts in real life through several articles on the net, the real picture started to emerge out.
Closely observe his early life, & set aside the munna bhai from the real life Sanjay Dutt.

In his teenage, Sanju got into drug addiction & was later rehabilitated. He cames across as a spoilt brat & it looks like he was not brought up with care by his parents, him being a star pair's son.
And then we have reports that the star had links with the underworld goons & that he was seen attending the lavish parties thrown by them. There could be an other angle to it too... that may be he was forced to attend such parties as we all know that the Underworld is known to put pressure on Bollywood for their own gains.

It turns out to be the two faces of the same coin.
The first side of the coin:
Sanjay obtained an AK 56 rifle & a 0.9 MM pistol from the underworld goons & claims that he procured them for his family's safety. But then, why did he have to get it from the guys who were involved in the 1993 bomb blasts?
His answer seems to be that he never knew what these guys were up to...!!!

All in all, we know that the minimum punishment under the Arms Act is 5 years. And Sanju has got 6 years.. May be a year more... since as per the judge, he not only committed the crime but he also got two others into it by asking them to destroy it without the knowledge of the police.

But if you look at the other side of the coin, the old man has already spent 16 months in jail when he was under-trial & the sword of rigorous jail term always was hanging above his neck since 14 years...
As we term it.. Justice delayed is justice denied...

The question is why did it take 14 long years to convict him & come to a decision? The basic problem lies in this fact. As we know, law is same for all & Sanju had to serve his punishment, but may be his term of sentence could have been reduced keeping all these factors in mind.

So.. in conclusion.. The sympathy which Sanjay Dutt is getting that he should be let off completely is understandably due to his munna bhai image & his soft spoken behavior in the society.

Sanjay Dutt definitely needs to pay for his criminal acts but looking at his past 14 years where he was always under the dark shadow of being accused as a criminal, & his good conduct in the society, his term can be definitely reduced.
